Morgan Rielly scored a goal and an assist as the Toronto Maple Leafs picked up two more points on Wednesday night as the team beat the Detroit Red Wings 6-3 at the Air Canada Centre.

In the second period, the Detroit Red Wings were able to cut a 4-1 deficit to 4-3 after a pair of goals from Tomas Tatar and Jonathan Ericsson. With the Red Wings back in the game, Morgan Rielly fired home a point shot on the powerplay to give the Maple Leafs a 5-3 lead.

Toronto Maple Leafs goalie Curtis McElhinney drew his first start of the season. McElhinney turned aside 30 of 33 shots en route to picking up his first win of the season. He was solid between the pipes for Toronto with his only blemish coming on the Red Wings goal by Tomas Tatar. Tatar fired a shot, but McElhinney was unable to track and control the rebound which led to Tatar following up his own shot and placing the puck by the Leafs goalie.

The Maple Leafs were able to rush goaltender Jimmy Howard out of the net very quick Wednesday night. Howard allowed three goals on four shots and was pulled in favour of Petr Mrazek. Mrazek would turn aside 19 of 21 shots faced on the night in relief.

Auston Matthews goal and assist put him at ten-points on the season which currently has him tied in the NHL for sixth in points. Matthews also was Plus-3 on Wednesday which puts him tied for first in the NHL with a Plus-10, tying with William Nylander and Nikita Zaitsev.

The Toronto Maple Leafs win on Wednesday night improves the team to 6-1 on the season, while the Detroit Red Wings fall to 4-3.

The Toronto Maple Leafs next game will be Saturday, October 21st as they travel to the Canadian Tire Centre to battle the Senators. Detroit next plays back at home at the Little Caesars on Friday, October 20th as they battle the Washington Capitals.
