Frederik Andersen turned aside all 30 shots he faced on Tuesday night at the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Washington Capitals 2-0 at the Verizon Center.
Early in the third period with the game still in a scoreless tie, Morgan Rielly fired a shot from the point. The puck was underneath Washington goalie Braden Holtby and he could not track the puck. Maple Leafs forward Connor Brown was able to shovel the puck into the back of the net to give the Maple Leafs and the game it's first lead.
Goaltending was excellent on both ends of the ice as Braden Holtby was able to turn aside 28 of 29 in the loss, while Frederik Andersen was perfect between the pipes for the Leafs stopping 30 of 30. The shutout marked Andersen's first in the 2017-2018 season.
Connor Brown was able to make the most of his new opportunity in Tuesday's match. Brown who was recently promoted from the fourth line proved to Head Coach Mike Babcock that he made a smart choice by providing the heroics against the Capitals.
The game marks the first game back to Washington for the Maple Leafs since their meeting in the Eastern Conference Quarter-Finals in April.
Later in the third, Toronto forward Nazem Kadri would add an empty netter to ensure the 2-0 victory for the Leafs.
With the win, the Toronto Maple Leafs improve to 5-1-0 this season, while the Washington Capitals fall to 3-3-1.
The Washington Capitals next play Friday, October 20th as the team will head to Detroit to battle the Red Wings. The Toronto Maple Leafs waste no time as they are back home on Wednesday, October 18th to battle the Detroit Red Wings.
