Without question "The Sports Huddle" airing on Boston radio in the 1970's. Quoting from a 1973 Time magazine article The Sports Huddle" was a raucous weekly radio show dedicated to "looking out for the fans". It was hosted by Eddie Andelman, Mark Witkin and Jim McCarthy amateur broadcasters and professional fans. Andelman is often referred to as "The Godfather of Sports Radio". They complained about overpriced tickets, cold hot dogs, sports writers and the sports establishment. Being amateurs
gave them a fan's perspective and their show lit up the airwaves Sunday nights and was heard in 33 states and much of eastern Canada. Receiving up to 20,000!! calls per show the three super-fans played no favorites even taking shots at some of Boston's most revered athletes. When dumped by radio station WBZ reportedly under pressure from the Bruins more than 2000 loyal fans showed up in the station parking lot demanding their reinstatement.
Their antics were legendary. When trying to predict the 1972 Super Bowl they consulted a psychic, a bookie, two Chinese Abacus experts and assorted astrologers and then correctly
predicted a Miami Dolphin 14-7 victory over the Washington Redskins.
As a young teenager I remember tuning in the The Sports Huddle" If I pointed the antenna on my AM radio in the right direction I could pull in the signal although it would fade in and out at times. The show gave me the inspiration for Cable 10 Sports Line with Naz.
Sports has changed so much in the last forty years. My guess is the original Sports Huddle gang would still be railing against over priced tickets and lousy hot dogs. But some things never change. The incredible passion many of us Zoomers still have for the sports we grew up watching.
