Buds Begin: Toronto Maple Leafs Beat Winnipeg Jets 7-2

Patrick Marleau scored two goals on five shots in his debut as the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Winnipeg Jets 7-2 on Wednesday night at the Bell MTS Centre.

The Toronto Maple Leafs got off to a quick start as the team scored three goals within a two-minute and 38 second span in the first period. The goal scorers were Nazem Kadri, James Van Riemsdyk, and William Nylander who rushed the Maple Leafs off to a three to zero lead.

Maple Leafs goaltender Frederik Andersen turned aside 35 of 37 shots from the Winnipeg Jets, while also being named the first star of the matchup.

Toronto's special team's units performed well in the teams opener. The Leafs powerplay finished the game two for four which included goals from Nazem Kadri and Mitch Marner on the powerplay. The Maple Leafs penalty kill also preformed well oN Wednesday night shutting down the Jets powerplay to go 8 for 8 when killing penalties.

The Winnipeg Jets did not score a goal until the third period of the game when Mark Scheifele scored with 9:29 remaining in the 3rd period. Mathieu Perreault later added another goal with 7:03 left in the game.

Steve Mason started the game in goal for the Jets, but did not finish. Mason allowed five goals on twenty shots before being pulled in the second period for Connor Hellebuyck. Hellebuyk faced 11 shots in net and allowed two goals.

The Toronto Maple Leafs win their first game of the season to improve to 1-0, while the Winnipeg Jets loss places them at 0-1.

The Winnipeg Jets next game is Saturday night as they travel to Calgary to play the Flames at 8:00 PM EST.
